Welcome from

the Headmistress

At Norwich High School, we believe passionately in putting girls first. We give girls the very best opportunities to find their strengths, explore the whole breadth of subject options, and tailor all that we do around their needs.

Whilst we have a long standing tradition of fostering academic success, Norwich High School for Girls offers an education which is about more than exams. Outstanding sport, music, art, performance and innovative enrichment opportunities ensure that all girls enjoy and achieve as much as possible.

We aim to develop girls who are confident in their own voice. Our pioneering Inspiring Females programme, for example, brings bold, innovative and creative women from all fields into the school to inspire and mentor our girls, enabling them to imagine and start preparing for an exciting future. Likewise, our new Qualities programme is designed to develop skills and attributes that will put our girls first in the world beyond school.

Since its foundation over a century ago, Norwich High School has been committed to creating outstanding girls’ education, preparing young women for lives of contribution and achievement.

Our ambition today is to continue that mission with the same spirit. A spirit that is as relevant in the 21st century as it was in 1875. What I believe really makes our school special is the exceptionally strong sense of community and collaboration which lasts long after girls have left the school, and the warm relaxed relationships between the girls, as well as with the staff.

I look forward to welcoming you to our special community very soon.

Mrs Kirsty von Malaisé

Headmistress

About our School

We are a friendly, vibrant and outward-looking community and are always happy to welcome visitors, whether you are a prospective pupil or parent, a former student or simply wish to learn more about the school.

Ensuring each girl is valued and supported throughout her time at the school is at the heart of what we do and we are immensely proud of everything the girls achieve, whether it be examination results, sporting, musical or creative endeavours or community service and charity work.

We aim to foster a love of intellectual enquiry and a concern for others and to nurture self assured, happy young women with the confidence and drive to pursue their ambitions and make a positive difference. As a member of the GDST (Girls Day School Trust) family of schools we are part of the UK’s leading network of independent girls’ schools.

We believe Norwich High School for Girls is an exceptional school and hope you will be able to visit in person to experience for yourself what makes it such a wonderful place.

Our Mission Statement

For parents who take their daughters’ schooling seriously, Norwich High School for Girls provides a unique education. Since its creation in 1875, one of the first girls’ schools in England, Norwich High School has been Norwich & Norfolk’s leader in girls’ education. Rooted in a city with a long tradition for independent thought, Norwich High School has had a history of pioneering education for girls for nearly 150 years. Additionally its membership of the Girls Day School Trust, a network of girls’ schools across England and Wales, means it can provide unmatched opportunities and resources for students, staff and alumnae. The values which motivate Norwich High School and drive our behaviour are:

We believe

in putting

girls first

Girls in girls-only schools

benefit from the fact that

everything is designed and developed to meet their

educational and pastoral needs.

We believe in pioneering education

Since its foundation over

a century ago, Norwich High

School has been committed to pioneering girls’ education.

We believe that education is about more than exams

Academic education is at the heart of what we do but we believe that the best education also includes sport, music, art, drama, and a full range of extracurricular activities.

We believe in

our community

Norwich High School was created by the radical and enterprising people of Norwich. We remain committed to that community and to its values, and to the unique community that is the Norwich High School family.

Why girls only?

Norwich High School remains true to its founding principles – we offer girls excellence in education, experience and opportunity – and we have always been keen to embrace fun and allow girls to flourish.

Copious research has signposted that girls do better in a single-sex environment. Here are some of the reasons why:

  • Girls happiness, development and success are at the core of everything that happens in a girls-only school.
  • Pastoral programmes are tailor made for girls and anticipate their particular needs.
  • Girls are able and encouraged to excel in every subject area, every activity and every performance.
  • In a girls-only school, all the positions of leadership and responsibility are held by girls.
  • Girls will take more intellectual risks in an all girl environment.
  • Girls and boys mature academically and emotionally at different stages and teaching them separately allows effective differentiation.
  • Single-sex schools consistently achieve the best results.
  • Greater levels of confidence in both sexes are apparent when they are taught separately.
  • Girls and boys have fewer anxieties over peer pressure in single-sex environments.
  • Girls from single-sex schools have more positive attitudes to non-stereotypical careers.
  • A greater percentage of students from girls’ schools go on to higher education
  • Girls develop confidence in their own abilities as individuals and do not define themselves by gender.

At Norwich High, we have introduced ‘Qualities’ , a brand-new programme designed to put our girls first in the world beyond school.

These Qualities are a mixture of critical thinking skills and personal attributes that we (and the World Economic Forum) have identified as crucial for success, both academically and in their future careers.

These Qualities are Analysis, Interpretation, Evaluation, Collaboration, Determination, Approach, Problem Solving, Creative Thinking and Reasoning. The Qualities will be embedded in everything we do at Norwich High School from being used as key themes of our assemblies, to being included in our Prep School exercise booklets.

Travel to us

Our flexible mini-bus route covers six main roads across the whole of Norfolk, as well two smaller routes which pick-up and drop-off at the Norwich train station and bus station.

We have limited spaces available on all of our routes.

Please let us know if you would like to join one of our existing mini-bus routes, or would like to be considered for a new route.

Our History

Enjoying a rich local history, Norwich High School for Girls has been settled at Eaton Grove for the last 80 years, with a history which goes back as far as 1875.

An important landmark both in the city’s educational provision and in terms of its 14 acres of green space located so close to the city centre.

Throughout its time at Newmarket Road, Norwich High has flourished as the city’s finest all-girls school, fulfilling its aims of providing excellent academic inspiration and opportunities to girls across Norfolk.
