Sport in the Junior Department
Junior girls at Norwich High School are keen and successful sportswomen. PE lessons take place daily for juniors and four times a week for infants. Lessons are taught by form teachers until Year 4 and then by members of the school’s excellent PE staff team. The exception is swimming, which is taught by PE staff from the outset. Lessons at infant level consist of a weekly swimming session and three periods aimed at developing physical agility. Dance is taught in music and movement lessons. Juniors continue with swimming every week and also have lessons in dance, gymnastics, hockey, netball, athletics, rounders and tennis. Throughout our PE provision, our emphasis is firmly on participation and enjoyment. In Years 4, 5 and 6 (Lower II to Lower III), there are opportunities to join the netball, hockey (Year 6), swimming and cross-country (Years 5 and 6) squads in the autumn and spring terms and the rounders, tennis and athletics squads in the summer. From the squads, teams of girls are selected to play against other local schools and also in GDST tournaments from time to time. Other competitive opportunities are in cross-country running and orienteering.
Sport in the Senior Department
We aim to give all our Year 7 to 13 pupils an insight into various sport and leisure activities. We hope these will give a good grounding in skills and tactics to enable students to follow the activity up to club level or beyond. Above all, our aim is to provide tuition that is fun! Girls have an opportunity to take part in all the following during their time at Norwich High School.

There is also the opportunity for students to represent the school, county and national teams in a range of sports. Girls can take part in various clubs (during lunchtime) throughout the year. Teams of girls are selected from these clubs. Fixtures and matches are played locally and further afield. Senior teams include swimming, hockey, lacrosse, netball, rounders and tennis. For those with a keen interest in a particular sport, there is the opportunity to help coach and assist with team practices. Girls can choose to take Physical Education GCSE short course in Year 10.
CSLA
In the Sixth Form, girls can become involved in the Community Sports Leadership Award programme (CSLA). This is a nationally recognised award which enables young people to improve their confidence and communication skills by leading young children in sport. Universities regard this as a valuable course, as it develops the attributes they are looking for in young people. Students participating in this course are required to attend in their lesson time until the Easter holidays, after which they can choose their options!
A level Physical Education
For girls with a real interest in sport, A level PE is a broad and varied course encompassing several different topics. A Level PE is more than just playing sport and combines well with many subjects, such as Biology, Chemistry and History. The course provides a wide scope for Further Education possibilities including sports science, physiotherapy, PE teaching, recreation and leisure management, and the armed forces.
