On Tuesday June 30th, a selection of our Year 12 A-Level Psychology students participated in the annual Psychology Cup Competition, an event held across the entire Girls’ Day School Trust network. The tournament challenges students to present findings from an independently designed and delivered research project. 

This year’s field was exceptionally fierce, with a record 14 GDST schools from across the country participating. The Norwich High School team – comprising of Tilly, Sophie, Shona, Phoebe and Maiya – rose to the challenge and delivered a presentation titled: “Do tracking apps like Life360 increase people’s view of the world as a dangerous place?”

The students investigated the psychological impact of modern location-tracking technology. To gather data, they cleverly used a group of NHS alumnae as a comparison group; specifically looking at individuals who did not have access to tracking apps when they were 17 and their perceptions of safety. 

The pressure was on as the team had to present their findings for 15 minutes to a formidable panel of psychology experts. Following the presentation, the team faced a “real grilling” during the Q&A session. They had to think on their feet, defending their research methodology and conclusions under intense academic scrutiny.

The judges were deeply impressed by the depth and rigor of our students’ research. Out of only five categories awarded in the entire competition, our Norwich High School for Girls team took home the prestigious prize for Best Use of Results and Analysis.

The panel highly commended the team’s thorough approach, which expertly blended both numerical data and open-ended qualitative questionnaires to form a complete psychological picture of their chosen area of research. 

This brilliant win marks the third successive year that Norwich High has been awarded a prize at the Psychology Cup, cementing our school’s reputation for academic excellence in Psychology.
