A new Head for Norwich High School for Girls

We are delighted to share that we have appointed Miss Alison Sefton as the new Head of Norwich High School, starting in September 2020.

Miss Sefton grew up in Scotland and was educated at Dollar Academy, a co-educational independent school in the The Ochils, a range of Scottish hills, north of the Forth valley.

She studied Chemistry at Durham University and then headed to London where she trained as an accountant. It was at this time that she also joined the Honourable Artillery Company as an Army Reservist. Her early career saw her work in a variety of organisations from City of London investment banks and a Divisional Headquarters in Iraq; to a medium-sized Essex independent school and then a small Shropshire independent school.

After ten years working in financial services, she took her Postgraduate Certificate of Secondary Education at the University of Chester with the plan to become a Chemistry teacher -  and she has not looked back since. Outside the classroom, she donned her army uniform to work with pupils in the Combined Cadet Force, wrapped herself up in waterproofs for many a Duke of Edinburgh’s expedition and has taken pupils on expeditions to the far reaches of South-East Asia and Africa.

She continued to progress in her educational career first at Felsted School in Essex where she was latterly Head of Science and a Housemistress then as Head of Chemistry at Welbeck, The Defence Sixth Form College. After this, she moved to Oswestry School, an all-through, independent, co-educational day and boarding school in Shropshire. She started there as Head of Science, and then progressed to her current role of Deputy Head Academic, where she has developed a new faculty structure, and implemented a whole-school learning ethos and an enhanced co-curricular programme.

Miss Sefton is passionate about ensuring that every pupil has the opportunity to excel and achieve in areas they apply themselves to with grit and determination. A dynamic and determined character who supports and empowers her staff, she is renowned for her excellent rapport with young people, whose best interests she always puts first.

“For me, learning is not only about what happens in the classroom. Every experience a girl has on her journey through Norwich High School for Girls will shape her future. I hope to develop further the myriad opportunities that the girls have, helping them to realise their full potential through the right level of challenge and support, so they can go into the world fully equipped for an exciting future.”

In her free time, she loves travelling and being outdoors, and is a keen runner, cyclist and swimmer who keeps meaning to do more triathlons.

We all look forward to welcoming Miss Sefton to Norwich High School later this year, when you will have an opportunity to meet her yourselves.
