For Rachel’s family, GCSE Results Day is about much more than the grades she opened this morning. Having joined Norwich High at the beginning of Year 10, Rachel is celebrating an outstanding set of results, including five grade 9s and two grade 8s in Combined Science. But today is also about celebrating how far she has come in just two years – growing in confidence, discovering new passions and beginning to believe in what she can achieve. And as she continues into Sixth Form at Norwich High, it marks the start of an exciting new chapter.
Year 11 student, Rachel, joined Norwich High in Year 10. Having just completed her GCSEs, Rachel’s mum shares her perspective as a parent, celebrating how far she’s come in just two years.
Finding Her Confidence
When Rachel arrived at Norwich High at the beginning of Year 10, her family was looking for something different.
Rachel needed an environment where she could feel settled, supported and able to find her confidence again.
Two years later, her family can see a remarkable difference.
“She is vastly different,” says Rachel’s mum. “Once she joined Norwich High, her confidence soared.”
Today, Rachel is celebrating an excellent set of GCSE results, including grade 9s in English Language, English Literature, History, Spanish and Classical Civilisation, alongside two grade 8s in Combined Science and a grade 7 in Maths. But for her mum, the results are only part of the story.
“What I’m most proud of is the journey – how far we’ve come in just two years, from really struggling to such amazing results. What a huge journey in such a short period of time.”
Discovering New Passions
Rachel’s GCSE results reflect not only her hard work, but some of the interests she has discovered during her time at Norwich High.
One of the biggest surprises of Rachel’s time at Norwich High has been her growing interest in Physics.
STEM subjects had not previously been on Rachel’s radar, but the encouragement of her teachers helped her discover an enjoyment of science that she hadn’t expected. “My passion for it was probably what drove me to work harder and improve my grades.”
Her mum believes the teaching team played an important role in helping Rachel find that passion.
“Some of the subjects, particularly the STEM subjects, were not really on our radar, but credit to the science teachers. She really found a new passion for the sciences.”
That discovery has influenced Rachel’s next steps. She will continue into Sixth Form at Norwich High, studying Physics, History and English Literature, with university possibilities including Law or English Literature.
Growing Into Herself
For Rachel, however, some of her biggest changes have happened beyond her academic results.
She describes herself when she first joined the school as “quite a timid young girl” who wasn’t particularly focused on her academics. The welcome she received from the school community quickly began to change that.
“Just a couple of days into joining the school, the community made me feel so welcome,” she says. “I think it inspired me to be more determined with both my academics and my self-confidence.”
Her mum has seen the same transformation, describing changes in Rachel’s social confidence as well as her confidence in herself.
The support of teachers and the pastoral team has been particularly important.
“Such lovely teachers, who really care and invest in the students, made a huge difference.”
For Rachel, that sense of support has helped her discover more about herself.
“I’ve learnt a lot about myself. I can credit that to the wonderful teachers and the wonderful pastoral team, and just the general community and environment.”
A Place to Find Your Own Interests
Rachel has also enjoyed the opportunities to explore interests beyond her academic subjects. She took part in a small jazz music club, playing guitar and she remembers the experience fondly.
“I just love the sense of community. Everyone’s so friendly.”
It’s the breadth of opportunities that she feels is particularly special about Norwich High.
“The range of extracurricular options is spectacular and really, really special. There’s something for everyone.”
For Rachel, that doesn’t mean taking part in everything. Instead, it is about knowing that there are opportunities available to explore when something sparks an interest.
Whatever happens, your presence matters in whatever comes next.
Looking Ahead: Norwich High Sixth Form
For Rachel and her family, continuing at Norwich High for Sixth Form was an easy decision.
“It was a no-brainer,” says her mum. “The teaching, the pastoral support, just all around. It was such a fantastic school. It was a no-brainer to want to stay here.”
Rachel is looking forward to the next stage of her education, continuing to study subjects she enjoys while remaining part of the community where she has grown so much.
Rachel’s GCSE results tell one part of her story. Her journey tells another. She finishes Year 11 with excellent results, new academic interests, greater confidence and a clear sense that she is ready for what comes next.
Her advice to her younger self captures that change:
“Trust yourself. Have confidence, and it will be okay.”
And for any parent considering Norwich High for their daughter, her mum’s message is clear:
“Absolutely 100% apply. You will not regret it. It’s a completely different school to any school I’ve experienced. You can’t go wrong. It’s just brilliant.”
