The Cranmer Awards, organised by the Prayer Book Society, celebrate the timeless beauty of the 1662 Book of Common Prayer. This prestigious competition encourages young people to engage with one of the greatest works of English literature by reading or reciting passages of their choice.

Participants select a 3–5 minute passage to read or recite, with local heats taking place across the country. Winners from these heats progress to the National Finals, where they must recite their chosen passage from memory.

The 2025 Norfolk heat was held at St Lawrence’s Church, Castle Rising on Wednesday 27th November, hosted by Lord Howard and judged by a panel that included TV presenter Anne Robinson. Norwich High students performed exceptionally well, with Amelia in Year 10 winning first prize in the Junior Division. She will now represent Norwich High at the National Finals at Holme Pierrepoint Hall in Nottinghamshire in February 2025. Congratulations, Amelia!

Student Impressions:

“I enjoyed the experience as I was able to hear a variety of interesting extracts and interpretations. After winning first place in the Junior category, we even visited Castle Rising briefly—it was a memorable day, despite the chilly weather!” – Violet, Year 10

“I felt prepared thanks to Mr Emerson’s guidance, but I was still a little nervous. The atmosphere was welcoming, which gave me confidence. I’m thrilled to have won and look forward to the National Finals!” – Amelia, Year 10

Mr Emerson-Moering, Head of Philosophy and Religion at Norwich High School for Girls who supported and guided the students, added:
“Well done to all participants! You read beautifully, and I hope to see you competing again next year.”

We wish Amelia the very best as she represents Norwich High School at the National Finals!
