Norwich High Greenpower team win Best Newcomer at Hethel test track

Congratulations to the Norwich High F24 Greenpower team on a very successful first race at Lotus’ Hethel test track.

It was an early start for the team on Saturday morning. On arrival, each squad member had a chance to drive the car during the morning practice and the fastest four drivers represented the school in the afternoon’s races.

The girls’ driving was excellent and incredibly consistent, putting in lap time after lap time within fractions of a second of each other. Considering the girls built the car in less than three months, they sailed through the event with no major mechanical issues, except a rather ‘shaky’ start with slightly misaligned steering. A quick fix left the car running smoothly all day.

The girls won the award for Best Newcomer, finishing in sixth place in their category and eleventh overall, beating several teams with many more years of experience.

“We couldn’t be prouder of this wonderful group, they did the school proud!” said Head of Science and Physics Mr Hyland. “We also got to meet representatives from the JP Blanch Foundation, who kindly donated £1500 towards the cost of the car. They were very happy to see the girls racing.”

Head Miss Sefton commented: “I am delighted to see how well the girls have done with this project. The opportunity to race this weekend was the culmination of a lot of hard work over the last few months and I hope that this is the first of many races for the Norwich High F24 team.”

Greenpower Education Trust is a UK based charity with an outstanding track record in kick starting careers in engineering. The charity helps unlock potential and spark enthusiasm for Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) through the excitement of motorsport.

Formula 24 aims to inspire young people to become engineers by presenting the industry as an interesting and relevant career choice. The main idea is for teams of students to build and race their own electric powered race car at top racing circuits around the country such as Goodwood.
