Norwich High Prep School has overseen an exciting new development over the summer break, upgrading a space in Stafford House into a brand new Food Technology Room and refurbished STEM Lab.

The development is a direct result of a questionnaire sent to the school community by the Head of Norwich High School for Girls, Alison Sefton, which revealed that the addition of a food technology space would be welcomed amongst pupils and parents.

Norwich High Prep School has run popular cookery clubs over the past several years and this new space means food technology can now run as a lesson alongside STEM, art and coding for Years 5 and 6, teaching food preparation, nutrition, budgeting and healthy meal planning; with the addition of forest school sessions in Years 3 and 4 over two double periods a week.

“At Norwich High School for Girls, we are passionate about equipping our students to be the best they can be and learn without limits. The new Food Technology Room and updated STEM Lab are a brilliant addition to our site, allowing us to further widen our offering through allowing girls to continue to explore a greater diversity of lessons and opportunities.”

Head of Norwich High Prep School and Nursery, Mrs Susan Roberts continued: “Our inspiring STEM curriculum pulls together learning in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths, allowing students to develop problem solving strategies and coding techniques in practical, collaborative sessions. Working out how to make a periscope, steady a building in an earthquake or fire a marshmallow from a catapult develops far more than just the girls’ practical skills. We are also teaching our girls how to learn, encouraging them to think for themselves through questioning, imagining, prioritising, inventing, predicting and looking for alternatives. All skills which will equip them well throughout their education and beyond.”

The school will also be launching the ‘STEM Squad’, a free after school outreach STEM club for girls aged 6-9 from September 2022. This will utilise the strong STEM offering of the school for those interested in science from the wider community.

“Curiosity, confidence and wonder are key skills we look to inspire in our students and we are thrilled to be able to open up this offering to those outside the school community. We are a community made by girls and we would love to see you there in September!”
