A team of Year 9 scientists secured victory over tough competition in the recent Top in Science competition.

A team of 12 Year 9 students from Norwich High School recently took part in the exciting Top Class in Science competition, an inter-school challenge run by CAST Education for Year 6 and Year 9 students across Norfolk.

The competition is designed to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers by engaging students in a variety of interactive activities, including games, experiments, and live demonstrations. Since January, our students have successfully progressed through several challenging rounds, earning their place in the live final held at the University of East Anglia (UEA) Drama Studio on Tuesday 24th March.

In the final, Norwich High faced strong competition from Taverham High School. With scores incredibly close throughout, the evening proved to be both thrilling and entertaining for the many parents and siblings who came along to support.

The team made a fantastic start, with Isla and Alexandra achieving a perfect score of 10/10 in the Chemistry round, demonstrating an impressive knowledge of elements. Eloise and Angelina followed this success with full marks in a lively science and music round, complete with karaoke-style participation.

Verity and Clara continued to build the team’s score in a challenging round on animal habitats, correctly identifying a range of unusual environments. In the fast-paced IT acronyms round, Lucy and Imogen rose to the challenge against a quick-thinking opposing team, contributing valuable points.

Creativity shone through in the Pictionary round, where Zara and Eva entertained the audience with their imaginative drawings, bringing the first half to a close on a high note.

The second half began with a memorable Biology round, featuring teachers in sumo suits as students identified body parts – Camilla and Zara scored an impressive 11/12. Poppy and Alexandra impressed in the “Science in the News” round with thoughtful and inventive headline ideas.

Isla and Imogen demonstrated excellent problem-solving skills in the “Mathematics of Baked Beans” round, while Lucy and Angelina secured full marks in the Physics round, showcasing their strong understanding of astronomy.

Heading into the final round, the score stood at a nail-biting 61–60 in favour of Norwich High. The last challenge – a high-pressure buzzer round with penalties for incorrect answers – kept everyone on edge.  The girls nominated Isla, Eva and Alexandra for this final round. Showing remarkable composure and lightning-fast reactions, the Norwich High team secured victory with a final score of 66–60.

This was a fantastic achievement for all involved, and the students should be extremely proud of their teamwork, enthusiasm and scientific knowledge throughout the competition.

“It was such a lovely fun evening, the quiz masters were excellent! I think it was a real boost to all the girls confidence. It was very interesting to compare girls in a mixed school with an all girls school and how our girls just naturally saw themselves equal to the boys.”
