As part of our Trailblazing Alumnae series, we are proud to spotlight Abbie from the Class of 2018, whose journey from Norwich High to an exciting career in engineering showcases the transformative power of a Norwich High education.
Trailblazers: 150 Years of Norwich High Women
A Strong Foundation: Abbie’s School Years
Abbie attended Norwich High School for Girls from August 2011 to June 2018, completing her journey from Year 7 to Year 13. Reflecting on her time at the school, Abbie fondly recalls the supportive environment of an all-girls school, where she felt empowered to pursue her interests in STEM subjects without the stereotypes that often deter young women in these fields.
“I really enjoyed attending an all-girls school. The encouragement from teachers to study STEM subjects, free from stereotypical comments, was a definite bonus. I also made lifelong friendships and great memories,” she shared.
Discovering Passions and Building Skills
While at Norwich High, Abbie’s favourite subjects were Maths and Chemistry. “Not only were these subjects fascinating, but the engaging teachers and having my best friends in class made learning even more enjoyable,” she said.
Beyond academics, Abbie’s school years were enriched by extracurricular activities. She joined the rowing team as a coxswain, initially hoping to avoid exercise but soon found herself captivated by the camaraderie and competition. Her team’s dedication led them to the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, USA. Additionally, Abbie’s participation in the Duke of Edinburgh Award programme (Bronze, Silver and Gold) helped her develop new skills, foster friendships and create lasting memories during adventurous expeditions.
Abbie also cherished the opportunities for cultural immersion, such as language exchanges. “The school’s trips and exchanges were incredible experiences. I still send a Christmas card every year to my German exchange partner!”
Charting a Career Path
Abbie credits Norwich High with helping shape her career aspirations. “The encouragement to study STEM subjects and the support to explore various fields enabled me to become a confident individual ready to grasp opportunities as they came,” she said.
After leaving Norwich High, Abbie pursued her passion for engineering at the University of Sheffield, completing a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. Following graduation, she joined the International Engineering Development Scheme at ABL Group, an Energy and Marine Consultancy.
Her professional journey has already taken her to exciting places: from working on structural engineering design scopes in Newcastle to her current role as a Marine Warranty Surveyor in Stavanger, Norway. Abbie’s work involves travel to shore-based sites and offshore support vessels, offering her unique experiences and a global perspective. With opportunities to relocate to destinations such as Dubai, Perth and New York, her future in engineering is as expansive as it is promising.
Looking Back with Gratitude
When asked about her favourite aspect of Norwich High, Abbie’s answer was immediate: “The friends I made.” She explained, “Although GCSEs and A Levels were stressful, those aren’t the moments I remember most. The memories of rowing training, the German exchange, and even muck-up day are what have stayed with me.”
Inspiring the Next Generation
Abbie wholeheartedly recommends a Norwich High education to today’s girls. “I had a great time, incredible experiences and an education that set me on the path to my current career,” she said.
Her story is a testament to the school’s commitment to fostering ambition, resilience and curiosity. As we celebrate 150 years of Norwich High School for Girls, Abbie’s journey is a shining example of the remarkable achievements our alumnae continue to reach.
