Norwich High School for Girls, on Newmarket Road, hosted their second annual Under 11’s Norwich High Prep football tournament on Friday 21st April. A total of 10 teams from schools around Norwich took part.

Mr Harry Barker, Year 6 Teacher at Norwich High School for Girls and player for Wroxham FC, said: “It was fantastic to see 100 girls competing against each other on both of our football pitches. This is now the second tournament that we have held, and I am already excited for the next one. The tournament was played in great spirit. We saw tremendous saves, passing, tackles, goals and many smiles! Well done to Taverham Junior School who emerged victorious to claim the Gold Cup and Sprowston Junior School who took home the Silver Cup.”

“The excitement around women’s football is growing. Recently, Norwich City Women hosted Ashford Town FC at Carrow Road, and welcomed 7,585 supporters to Carrow Road. As we approach the FIFA Women’s World Cup this summer, I am confident that many of the girls who participated in the tournament will enjoy their summer of football tuning into the Lionesses’ matches in Australia and New Zealand.”

It was lovely to receive positive feedback from a number of teachers from visiting schools. One of the teachers said: “It was great to see about 100 girls enjoying playing football – many of whom had never played a match before today. Our girls had an absolute blast!”

One of the girls representing our school team said: “I loved the tournament. It was so much fun, and it was nice to play against lots of other schools. We came 4th in the Gold Cup which is a big achievement for us after our success at the GDST Tournament last November.”

“The pitches around the school site were filled with footballers all day and it was fantastic to see. I really enjoyed watching matches throughout the day. Many thanks to Mr Barker for organising the tournament and masterminding the day which was a huge success and congratulations to all who took part.”
