As we approach International Women’s Day (8th March), it seemed an opportunity to reflect on the influence of the women in my family and the school that shaped us across the three generations which attended Norwich High School. This year, as we celebrate 150 years of Norwich High School for Girls, I feel especially fortunate to have been part of this incredible institution, as a student and now returning as a member of staff.
Head of Product Design, Mrs Louise Ryan, reflects on how three generations of Norwich High women have shaped her family.
“It’s a place where learning is celebrated, academic excellence and the joy of school life go hand in hand and where generations of women have been empowered to thrive.”
Of course, throughout the years different generations experience Norwich High School in their own way. My grandmother’s experience at Norwich High School (1940s) was shaped by the tumultuous times of war. Evacuated during the conflict, she faced a disrupted education, yet she emerged with a resilience and determination that defined her path. That same unwavering spirit saw her running her own business well into her 80s – a testament to the power of perseverance and hard work.
My mother also embodied this same ethos following her time at the school in the 1960s. Training as an Occupational Therapist, she also built her own nursery business, dedicating herself to the families she supported. She pours so much care and dedication into everything she does, leaving a lasting impact on the lives of many. Her journey is one of dedication, service and the pursuit of excellence – values that no doubt Norwich High School instilled in her and so many others.
Myself, I enjoyed my time here – I doubt I would be back had I not! It wasn’t just that I enjoyed my lessons; I was dedicated to pretty much every sports team going and even sort of enjoyed those 5am starts to get to Lacrosse tournaments (luckily my sister was keen on sports too)! I found friends for life from this school – the freedom to explore our own personalities, interests and strengths was celebrated, and I like to think that the current cohorts feel the same.
Now, as I once again walk the halls of the very school that shaped us all, I see those same values reflected in today’s students. Norwich High School continues to be a place where students embrace their academic journeys while finding joy in the everyday moments of school life. For example, students from all year groups often get fully into the spirit of events such as World Book Day, dressing up as their favourite characters and mixing the hard work of school with some more light hearted moments. What an important balance to have.
International Women’s Day is a time to appreciate, reflect and celebrate. It’s a moment to honour the women who paved the way before us, to acknowledge the strength and dedication that brought us here and to commit ourselves to creating an even brighter future for the generations to come.
I have such gratitude for the women in my own family paving the way for me and for the incredible school that has been the common thread in our stories – but also to the students who sit in front of me every day, challenging ideas and bringing energy and inspiration to our future.
For many students who are currently with us, they may not recognise the importance of their school journey until they leave this place and look back on the invaluable experiences, friendships and lessons they have gained. It may not be a written value, but one thing deeply ingrained in every student at Norwich High School is the belief in ourselves and our ideas. We leave with a strong sense of determination and the confidence to set goals, carve our own path – whether straight or winding – and pursue them with purpose.
The sense of community, the opportunities to grow and the unwavering support from teachers and peers will become even more evident as they step into the wider world with confidence and ambition.
Here’s to the past, the present and the future of Norwich High School and the remarkable women it continues to inspire.
