Several of our Sixth Formers are taking part in weekly science partnership sessions with children from local primary schools.

The Year 12 students lead practical sessions with the visiting students, who are invited to come into the labs at Norwich High School for Girls and get stuck into a variety of science experiments and activities.

The partnership is being facilitated by Physics teacher Miss Katie Jolly, who has received an enthusiastic response from local teachers. The partnership programme currently involves nine local schools, reaching over 300 children in Years 5 and 6. Norwich High School for Girls is also able to provide minibuses to help with transporting students between schools.

“It has been brilliant to watch the Sixth Formers prepare and facilitate the sessions and help instil a love of science in the younger generation.”

The partnership is made possible by the Lower Sixth Activities Programme, which takes place on one afternoon a week. Year 12 students pick an activity to be involved in, encouraging them to develop existing interests and to explore new ones. This means any Sixth Former can choose to be involved in the science partnership, even if they are not a scientist.

Miss Jolly explains, “Most of our helpers are doing science A Levels, but some aren’t. It’s great to see students enjoying the time in the laboratory and the experience of being a teacher, regardless of their A Level options.”

Themes for sessions in the past have included electricity, light and forces. This term, students will be leading an eye dissection!

“Helping with the sessions has been a joyous experience and the students were eager to learn and ask questions”
