Futures Made by Girls: Our Sixth Form in Norwich

In Sixth Form thoughts turn towards the future – about life after school.

But what’s really important is defining what
your future holds, not anybody else’s.

The lives our girls go on to lead are
diverse, rich, exciting and unique.
It’s part of the reason why we don’t place a huge emphasis
on how many of our girls go to Oxbridge – because not all
of our sixth form students want to and
there are other paths to take.

Our role at Norwich High School For Girls Sixth Form is to do everything we can
to help you continue on the path you choose
your role is to work with us to explore it,
enjoy preparing for it, and give as much
as you can to achieving your goals.

“Our Sixth Form really brings the fun factor, and so much warmth in the inclusive and diverse family atmosphere in Lanchester House. The link to the GDST family of schools is such a benefit to our older girls, with a clear pathway towards their future beyond school.”

Hazel Packer, Director of Sixth Form at Norwich High School for Girls

Welcome to our Sixth Form

Our Norwich Sixth Form for Girls is our jewel in the crown and we are incredibly proud of all our Sixth Formers’ academic achievements, as well as their bold ambitions and successes beyond the classroom.

Our SIX+ programme is so-called because we prepare girls exceptionally well for their desired next steps. Our support for individuals with their university preparation is, we are often told, the best in Norfolk.

Extensive music, drama and sport opportunities are available to all girls who attend our Sixth Form, as well as an outstanding Enrichment programme that includes rewarding creative and community projects.

Why Choose Our Girls Only Sixth Form?

If a girl has been equipped with confidence by the age of 16 shouldn’t that be enough?

We would argue not. Evidence suggests the best environment to promote gender equality to age 18 is through teaching boys and girls seperately. An all girls sixth form education only seems artificial if girls are seen as one dimensional and if formal schooling constitutes the totality of their lives. But girls have lives outside school. An all girl Sixth Form is not here to protect girls from the real world, its purpose is to prepare you for it.

All the leadership posts are taken by girls in our Sixth Form – there are so many opportunities to lead or create groups. Girls will thrive, grow and make an impact on the whole school.

Belonging to the strong network of the GDST with its alumnae network of over 100,000 ensures there are exciting opportunities for collaboration and mentoring beyond the physical school, which will last long after you leave.

“Having moved to this school for Sixth Form, I have been overwhelmed by the opportunities all girls are given to discover, nurture and pursue their passions in the classroom and beyond.”

Student stories

Connie’s story

Connie was an active member of the Sixth Form, competing in the first teams for hockey, netball and cricket, as well as pursuing her keen interest in drama, which she studied for A Level. She led theatre workshops for other students at school and performed her original darkly comic play, ‘CAT’ at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Connie also has a passion for music and was part of several choirs and instrumental groups in school. She embraced the many opportunities offered by our Music Department, which saw her perform in a wide variety of incredible locations across Norwich, such as St Andrew’s Hall, the Roman Catholic Cathedral and St Peter Mancroft. Her musical skills allowed her to lead the school choirs in original arrangements of Lana Del Ray’s ‘Video Games’ and Coldplay’s ‘Yellow’, and the choir also annually performs her original carols in Norwich Cathedral. Connie received a scholarship from the Royal College of Music, as well as offers from Cambridge University and King’s College London.

Nikitha’s story

Having found her voice through being a Form Leader and Year 7 buddy in the Senior School, Nikitha went on to lead the Big Sister team through lockdown and was elected to the role of Deputy Head Girl. Nikitha has also been instrumental in the work of the Biology Inclusion Group who have sought to create a more diverse and inclusive science curriculum this year. With a genuine interest in the wellbeing of others, it was no surprise that Nikitha’s ambitions lie in the service of others. Alongside her A Levels and roles of responsibility in school, she has gained plentiful work experience, including volunteering at C-19 vaccination clinics, to support her application to read Medicine at university.

Caitlin’s story

With a strong interest in theatre, music and the arts in general, Caitlin performed in many school productions and concerts throughout her time in the Senior School, most notably Miss Saigon. In the Sixth Form not only has she continued to make her mark through her own performances such as in ‘100’ and ‘Made in Dagenham’, but she also initiated, organised and compered an online theatre night involving collaborating with pupils from across the school in Lockdown. In her final year, she adapted Alan Bennett’s well known play, and directed performances of The History Girls with a cast of Senior School actors. In addition, Caitlin is the school’s Duke of Edinburgh Ambassador helping to nurture the confidence and skill set of younger pupils. Caitlin is looking forward to studying Theatre at university.
