The production of Les Misérables: School Edition last week was nothing short of extraordinary. Every time I passed the Hall and admired the set, I was reminded that a school musical is far more than a performance; it is an educational experience that shaped character, confidence and community in a way no classroom alone could.

From the first rehearsal, our students discovered that Les Misérables: School Edition demanded commitment. The score was challenging, the story was intense and the ensemble work required precision and unity.

Yet, rather than being daunted, our students rose to the challenge. They learned to support one another, listen carefully and celebrate each small step of progress. In doing so, they developed resilience and determination which are qualities that will serve them long after the curtain falls.

The musical also offered countless opportunities for students to discover strengths they didn’t know they had.

• Performers found their voice.
• Backstage crews mastered lighting, sound and stage management.
• Students who may have been quiet in lessons became confident leaders during rehearsals, offering suggestions, solving problems and encouraging their peers.

The production became a place where everyone had a role and every contribution mattered.

Perhaps the most valuable lesson was the sense of belonging it created. A cast and crew of students from different year groups worked side-by-side, forging friendships and connections that might never have formed otherwise.

They learned the importance of collaboration, empathy and trust, which are skills central not only to performing arts but to life itself.
