Year 12 students at Norwich High Sixth Form embrace extracurricular mathematics opportunities

Year 12 students at Norwich High School for Girls are demonstrating their ambition and empowered approach to learning in putting themselves forward for two challenging mathematics opportunities.

The GDST Sixth Form Maths Programme

Three students have been successful in applying to take up a place on the GDST Sixth Form Maths Programme. Shaana, Rashmi and Vicky are now embarking on the programme which involves them looking at the material via an online course that runs each Tuesday evening.

Mr Chris Shepherd, Head of Mathematics at Norwich High School for Girls commented: “I want to congratulate Shaana, Rashmi and Vicky for applying to the GDST Sixth Form Maths Programme in the first place and for being successful in getting on this brand new course. They are attending evening lectures with accompanying independent study tasks, online lectures, exam practice tasks and will be attending a one day conference in London in September.

“Whilst the course has benefits in terms of preparing the students for the Pure Maths required for the MAT, TMUA, NSAA and ENGAA entrance examinations, the added benefits of the students stretching their minds and their maths experience through the bespoke course will help the students in all their A Level work and beyond. The students are benefitting from personalised and flexible support as well as from joining a network of and collaborating with like minded GDST sixth formers across our family of schools.”

Decision 1 Maths

In addition to the above, four Year 12 mathematics students have chosen to study an extra module of the A Level Further Maths syllabus – Decision 1 Maths.

Mr Shepherd continued: “Advitha, Vicky, Shaana and Hannah are studying the Decision 1 Maths module in a small group each Tuesday after school having discussed and initiated this themselves. With a view to studying Computer Science related subjects at university this reflects well on their high aspirations, supported by the Mathematics Department.

“With others looking already into Oxbridge and World Class University applications, this has been a busy start to 2023 for our Lower 6 mathematicians. We wish them every success and we applaud their positive approach and determination.”
