We’re delighted to reflect on the incredible journey we had during British Science Week. From fascinating experiments to immersive experiences, it was truly a celebration of curiosity, discovery, and innovation.

Our students had the opportunity to delve deeper into the world of science through various events and activities. From a captivating chemiluminescence workshop to the magical transformation of 2p coins into ‘gold’ for our Prep students, there was something for everyone to enjoy.

Adding to the excitement were the exhilarating buzzer races that took place across the Prep and Senior School. Students competed in the GDST STEM spelling bee competition, and we are very proud of their efforts. We compared candy floss to glass, rode virtual roller coasters, and navigated through challenging hydraulic mazes.

Furthermore, our Sixth Form students designed a fun assembly and embarked on an enlightening trip to the Forum for a healthcare sciences visit, broadening their horizons and gaining valuable insights into the future of healthcare.

In addition, our Prep School and Nursery pupils delved into the fascinating world of fossils, unravelling the mysteries of the past and gaining a deeper understanding of our planet’s history.

“British Science Week truly allowed our students to explore, experiment, and embrace the wonders of science in all its forms. We are immensely proud of their enthusiasm and dedication, and we look forward to nurturing their passion for science throughout the year. Thank you to all the staff and students who made British Science Week such a resounding success.”

In the Prep School and Nursery

We have had a great time celebrating British Science Week in Prep. Every year group had a special science session, some of which were in the Senior School. At breaktimes, the girls have been on an element treasure hunt in the playground to complete their periodic tables and it was good to be able to award two funny periodic table books to the winners at the end of the week.

One of the highlights has definitely been the ‘Marvellous Medicine’ assemblies delivered by parents who have medical careers, showing how they use science everyday in their different roles. A huge thank you to all of these amazing parents for giving up time in their busy week to come and talk to the girls. They have been very inspiring and there may even be some girls who follow in their footsteps in the future.

Visit to the Royal Institution

A few of our Upper 2 scientists had a great day at the Royal Institution on Tuesday, at the GDST interactive science event. They extracted their own DNA and made them into necklaces and learnt about how to use crumple zones when designing vehicles to keep the passengers safe. They met two scientists who work at the RI and then enjoyed a tour before a fantastic interactive science show in the lecture theatre. They even managed to slime a teacher as part of the presentation – thankfully not Mr Billson or Mrs Barnes who were with our group!

“The girls in Prep really enjoyed seeing how some of the science they learn is used in action. It has also been a lovely opportunity to explore science outside of the normal curriculum and spark the girls’ curiosity; whether that has been turning coins gold, exploring fossils or making their own bio plastics.”
