Year 8 students organise fundraisers, donations and support to help local community

The Covid-19 pandemic has put a lot of strain on many local charities and good causes but that hasn’t stopped students in Form L4A from volunteering their time this academic year – even throughout the recent national lockdown.

At the end of last month (27th/28th February), L4A Charities Reps Rose and Iris organised a 10km Run/Walk/Cycle which students in their form completed individually.

Rose and Iris had three aims: to do something all ‘together’ and create a shared experience, to raise some money and to add kms to the final days of the GDST Get Active Competition, which took place in February.

Form Tutor Miss Anderson assisted Rose and Iris with some route-planning then the duo took the lead on the rest of the fundraiser, including setting up the Just Giving page.

A total of £175 has been raised for St Martin’s Housing Trust, which will make a difference to the lives of homeless people across the county.

Tabitha’s (L4A) ongoing effort to support Beavers in the recent lockdown has also been above and beyond. Tabitha assisted her mum, who is a Beaver Leader, several times in online Beaver meetings on Saturdays, helping with planning and delivering.

“Her amazing work has enabled our young children to feel connected with each other in this really difficult time for all the families,” said Beaver Leader and Executive Officer Jing Song.

“Thank you to Norwich High School for nurturing her since she joined. We are very lucky to have a young lady who is so caring and committed to the community.”

Tabitha also coordinated a donation with Iris in December last year for Norwich Baby Bank, with donations provided from students in L4A.

Also in the Autumn term, Alex (L4A) organised a food donation for the Silver Parcels Food Bank, which was delivered just before Christmas, and Lottie (L4A) arranged a clothes and toiletries donation for the Salvation Army.

Form Tutor Miss Anderson commented:

“We wanted to make sure that something positive could come out of this difficult time. The girls and I have found that having these events and projects to focus on has enabled us to feel less helpless and more connected to our community. I am so impressed with the proactive approach and maturity of L4A and I am looking forward to our charity Easter egg hunt in April!”

Head of Lower 4 Mrs Gaul added:

“Thank you to Miss Anderson for encouraging the students to do something practical and helpful, rather than simply donating money. I know that a lot of time, effort and skill has gone into supporting these very worthwhile local causes. A truly fantastic effort L4A!”

Well done to Rose, Iris, Tabitha, Lottie, Alex and the whole of L4A for doing such an amazing job throughout such challenging times!
