Congratulations to GDST Spotlight student Estelle who has been awarded an Arkwright Engineering Scholarship

Posted on 2nd October 2023

Norwich High School for Girls Year 12 student Estelle, who recently appeared in the GDST Spotlight video series highlighting her passion for kayaking and Product Design, has been awarded an Arkwright Engineering Scholarship.

The Arkwright Engineering Scholarships programme aims to identify, inspire and nurture future leaders in engineering, computing and technical (as opposed to aesthetic) design.Through the programme, Estelle gains a financial award and will complete a two year partnership with the Worshipful Company of Engineers Charitable Trust, a fellowship of leading engineers (and partners).

Arkwright Engineering Scholarships are a programme within The Smallpeice Trust (a registered charity) and are the most esteemed scholarship scheme of its type in the UK. Every Arkwright Engineering Scholarship is sponsored by an industrial company, university, charitable trust, trade association, professional institution, armed service, worshipful company, industry regulator or personal donor.

After completing an application, Estelle underwent the rigorous selection process including completing a two hour problem solving exam and sitting an interview with a panel including an Engineer. During the panel session she presented her GCSE Product Design coursework – a kayak stand.

“We are really proud of Estelle for successfully applying to be an Arkwright Scholar. Estelle is a dedicated student who has always shown understanding and commitment beyond the curriculum as well as a real flair for engineering. This is a prestigious, national accolade, and she should be very proud of her achievement.”

Mrs Louise Ryan, Head of Product Design

Mrs Ryan, an alumna of Norwich High School for Girls, herself achieved the Arkwright Scholarship when she was at Norwich High. She continued: “As well as being a past recipient of an Arkwright Scholarship, I was invited this year to be on the panel for some of the other candidates. It was really interesting and the high calibre of the students and some of the work which was presented was absolutely incredible. It is fantastic to be able to give back and support students with an interest in engineering.

“I know how much of a difference becoming an Arkwright Scholar made to me as it is so widely recognised – both within education including universities and in the workplace. The connection can provide opportunities like work experience and will open doors in the future for Estelle. She can use those opportunities to help her make decisions about her future. Estelle will be awarded her scholarship at a ceremony in November where she will also meet her sponsor.

“I found the application process challenging as there were many different aspects to it including a written application, an exam, and an interview. I’m really happy to have been given this scholarship and can’t wait to meet other scholars as well as meeting my sponsor and finding out about what their part is in the engineering industry.”

Estelle will be available to share her experiences so far and mentor younger students through the process. Applications are open to any student who wants to pursue engineering, including those who have chosen to study Product Design at GCSE as well as those with an interest in STEM subjects.”
