Norwich High Prep perform at Young Voices 2024

For the second year running, Norwich High Prep School has taken part in the Young Voices children’s choir concerts by performing to a sold out audience of parents, family and friends at the OVO Arena Wembley on Thursday 1st February. Young Voices was established in 1996, and since then has given more than two million children the chance to perform in venues across the UK.

65 pupils from Year 3 to Year 6 at Norwich High Prep School signed up to the Young Voices lunchtime club for the start of the academic year in September.

“I am very proud of our 2024 Young Voices choir. The singers have worked extremely hard learning all the songs and dance moves for their concert at Wembley, approaching the task with enthusiasm and excellent commitment. I know so many of the choir have been inspired by our trip to Wembley to take their music making to new heights by starting to learn an instrument, or joining Street Dance club. Well done to everyone that took part in the concert, roll on Young Voices 2025!”

Joe Wistow, Assistant Director of Music at Norwich High School for Girls

After travelling up to London by coach, the pupils and staff spent the afternoon rehearsing the varied and broad set list along with the rest of the choir of 5,000 school children with expert guidance from the world-class conductor, David Lawrence, as well as Musical Director Craig McLeish and Creative Director Andy Instone from the street dance crew Urban Strides.

“Working with professional musicians and dancers, and learning how to break down songs into parts to perform at such a large scale, is an incredible opportunity for the singers taking part. Despite a long day, the Norwich High students remained excited, engaged and working hard throughout the rehearsals.”

Susan Roberts, Head of Norwich High Prep School and Nursery

The group were able to break for a packed tea before getting ready for the evening concert when parents were able to come into the arena to take their seats for the sold out performance. Highlights of the evening show included appearances on stage alongside the choir from the incredible 13 year old British drummer Nandie Bushell, soul singer Natalie Williams and educational rapper MC Grammar. There was even a high energy 90s dance mash up which saw the whole audience on their feet and dancing along with the choir.

Mrs Roberts added: “Thank you to Mr Wistow and all the staff who helped support our trip to Young Voices this year. The concert was the culmination of lots of hard work. Music and movement has so many benefits for young people – confidence, self-belief, motivation, pride, communication. Through Young Voices the pupils gain so much and they absolutely love being part of the experience alongside their school friends. The amazing concert came together seamlessly resulting in an outstanding live performance which I know the parents watching thoroughly enjoyed. A magical memory for all of us and we are already looking forward to Young Voices 2025!”

“I really enjoyed my day at Young Voices. The rehearsing was really fun and at the proper concert in the evening, when we all sang together in harmony I really enjoyed it. When we turned our torches on together it looked amazing. The conductor and band on stage plus special guests were so nice and encouraging. Now I really like singing and am going to keep going with choir at school.”

“Thank you for your time and effort in organising Young Voices for the girls and parents. It was a wonderful event and our daughter and us enjoyed it immensely. It was fun but also inspirational. Please pass on our thanks to everyone who helped with this event. Thank you for helping us to create another wonderful memory with our daughter.”

“We had a really great day supporting the girls at Young Voices. We are so impressed with the quality of the singing – there was obviously a lot of hard work behind the scenes in supporting the girls to learn the songs and it paid off on the evening. What a great opportunity for them all. Thank you.”
