Senior School students take part in a number of activities and events to mark HMD 2022

Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) takes place annually on the 27th of January, the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, and gives us all an opportunity to pause and remember the six million Jewish men, women and children murdered by the Nazis, the millions more persecuted, and all those affected by subsequent genocides.

The theme for Holocaust Memorial Day 2022 is One Day and throughout this week (24th- 28th January), Senior School students will have the opportunity to take part in a number of activities to deepen their understanding of the Holocaust and take the time to explore the various ways of commemorating the victims of persecution, discrimination and torture – then and now – using the material in the HMD Google Classroom.

These activities involve:

  1. The Memorial Hall in L1. Students are encouraged to visit the memorial this week and find out about the victims whose photographs are displayed with a QR code; they can use their iPads to get to know the victims.
  2. Names & Stories. Part of the dehumanisation of the victims of the Holocaust was that their names were erased and replaced by a number tattooed onto their forearms. Students can give the victims their personality back by naming the person they have read about in L1 using the QR code and then post the name in the HMD Google Classroom.
  3. Memorial Art/Photos. Students can upload their photographic or artistic interpretation of the theme ‘ONE DAY’ in the HMD Google Classroom.
  4. Memorial Poetry. Students can upload their own poetic interpretation of the theme ‘ONE DAY’ in the HMD Google Classroom.
  5. Ceremony & Light the Darkness. Students and families can take part in the UK Ceremony for Holocaust Memorial Day 2022 which will be streamed online on Thursday 27th January, 7–8pm. At 8pm, get ready to Light the Darkness. Households across the UK will be lighting candles and safely putting them in their windows to remember those who were murdered for who they were stand against prejudice and hatred today
  6. Ignorance breeds prejudice which breeds discrimination – ONE DAY is TODAY. Students can inform themselves about the Holocaust and explore the Latest News and other resources via the links in the HMD Google Classroom.
  7. Schindler’s List film. Students aged 15+ are invited to watch the film ‘Schindler’s List’ this Friday after school.
