Norwich High School for Girls GDST is hosting its second annual Hack-her-thon event on 25th March 2024, allowing female students from Years 9-13 across Norfolk to explore the world of cyber challenges and unleash their coding creativity.

Last year, over 50 students from six different schools came together for the inaugural event, which saw students work in groups alongside local industry experts to code their own environmentally-themed apps.

This year’s event will follow a similar format, with teams diving into code-cracking and logic problems in the morning, before putting their cyber skills to the test in an afternoon challenge.

Students of all coding abilities are welcome, with the event aiming to create a safe and welcoming environment for young people to explore the world of computer science and coding.

The 2023 Hack-her-thon was hosted by two Norwich High Sixth Form alumnae, Alice Tubby and Britt Dewing, who wanted to create coding spaces that were not male-dominated to encourage other students to become more confident in their abilities.

“Computer Science has the largest gender-gap of all subjects at A Level. Trial and error is so important in learning anything (especially to code), and it’s therefore vital to create the right spaces for young people of all genders to feel confident and comfortable doing this, which is what we did with the Hack-her-thon. It was such a privilege to watch the participants build in confidence.”
