Norwich High Prep School decorate #madebygirls Breakasaurus for Break Charity’s Go Go Discover trail

Look out for the navy blue #MadebyGirls ‘Breakasaurus’ if you are out and about on Break Charity’s #GoGoDiscover trail this summer!

Almost 100 90cm-tall ‘Breakasaurus’ T.rex sculptures have been brought to life in 2022 thanks to the sponsorship of local businesses and the creativity of artists, schools and community groups across the county. The programme aims to harness community engagement, inspire creativity and imagination through art, whilst nurturing confidence and improving artistic skills.

Author and Norwich High Prep School parent Alexander Gordon Smith sponsored a Dino as part of the GoGoDiscover 2022 trail and donated the ‘Breakasaurus’ to the Prep School for the girls to decorate themselves.

The design, which was created during the Prep School’s Winter Arts Festival in February this year, has been kept under wraps until now and was revealed on Monday along with the other GoGo Dinos on the trail. The design was inspired by the school’s #MadeByGirls campaign.

“Made by girls is our way of celebrating the bold, curious and confident young people who make our school what it is. It is absolutely fantastic to have a Made by Girls dino as part of this year’s GoGo Discover trail. Every girl in the Prep School signed our Dino, Girlasaurus, in their own handwriting, and really enjoyed the whole process.”

Mrs Susan Roberts, Head of Norwich High Prep School and Nursery

“We finished the sculpture with a coat of iridescent sparkle paint, and love the final result.” continued Mrs Roberts. “Thank you to Mr Smith for sponsoring the Breakasuarus and passing it to our pupils to decorate. What a great opportunity for the girls to see their work in a public place whilst also supporting an important local charity who do vital work in the community.”

“I absolutely love what the students have done with their dino, Girlasaurus! It’s amazing to know that every girl in the Prep School—including two of my daughters, Elspeth and Aoife—played a part in sharing the message that so many incredible things are Made By Girls. The dinosaur embodies the real sense of community that I absolutely love about Norwich High School.”

Mr Smith, Author

“This is a school where everybody works together to make extraordinary things happen. It’s a real family, and I know Girlasaurus will be thrilled to be its newest member!” continued Mr Smith.

The ‘Breakasaurus’ sculptures join 79 full-size T.Rex sculptures located around Norwich city centre and the trail will also feature large Steppe Mammoth sculptures across Norfolk. Mr Smith and his wife Beki, who have two daughters at Norwich High School, also sponsored one of the full-size T.Rexes that are on display this summer. Their dinosaur, Feline-osaur, can be found outside John Lewis. It was decorated by the celebrated local artist Ella Goodwin, and features a family of playful cats.

“Every time there’s a GoGo sculpture trail in Norwich we take our girls and try to see them all. And this year we went one step further and decided to sponsor a statue ourselves, all to help out the incredible Break Charity. I asked my girls what they wanted on their dinosaur and the unanimous answer was cats, because they wanted a sculpture that brought a smile to people’s faces. Cats remind us to take a breath, take a break, and look after ourselves. They teach us to look after our mental well-being. Most of all, they teach us to be kind!

“It’s all to help raise money for the wonderful Break Charity, who do incredible work with kids and young people on the edge of care, who are in care, and those who have left care. Break have provided so much help to so many people, including my own family. My little brother Matthew visited Break houses quite a few times in order to give my mum a break. They’re a fantastic organisation, and I hope that the thousands of people who enjoy the trail this summer have the chance to check out the amazing work that Break do.”

The #GoGoDiscover sculpture trail runs from 27th June – 10th September 2022. You can find the #MadeByGirls ‘Girlasaurus’ in the Library at The Forum in Norwich. We would love to see your pictures! Please tweet or tag us @norwichhigh
