From the 26th February – 1st March, the Norwich High Prep School and Nursery hosted its Languages and Cultures Week, an opportunity for staff and pupils to celebrate and discover new languages, cultures and religions within our community. With 33 different mother languages spoken by over 50 different girls or their parents at home, we certainly had a lot to celebrate!

On Monday, the focus of our assembly was celebrating our Mother language whilst also being mindful that 40% of children across the world receive an education in a language that they do not speak at home.

Our Senior School French and German Language Assistants came to visit us on Tuesday, telling us about their favourite parts of their language and culture, which included some very long words, tongue twisters and cultural stereotypes.

On Wednesday, Gayatri Arjun shared her favourite parts of Indian culture. A vast country, with 28 states and almost as many official languages, India is also the birthplace of several different religions. We were impressed by her vibrant pictures of the different religious festivals, traditional dress and the spices of India and of her photos of the many beautiful monuments.

Carol Tong, a speaker of several different Asian languages, led our assembly on Thursday. We were given a lesson in how to read some basic Chinese characters.

Our Friday celebration assembly focussed on the language and culture work that we had completed during the week, including singing some of our favourite French songs, karaoke style!

The Language Assistants also brought books in different languages to read in the library and many girls participated in a language and culture quiz. On Friday breaktime, well over 60 pupils and staff came to our Languages and Culture Café to either teach someone or learn about a different language, culture or religion.
