Norwich High School for Girls has welcomed Mr Alex Lynch as our new Head of Biology.

Norwich High School for Girls has welcomed Mr Alex Lynch as our new Head of Biology. Mr Lynch joins us from Wymondham College, where he was a teacher of the subject. Before moving to Norfolk, he taught at Haberdashers’ Boys’ School in Hertfordshire, where he also had a pastoral role as Deputy Head of House.

Innovations in Biology

Mr Lynch has exciting plans for the Biology department. He said: “We’re currently updating our curriculum for Years 7-11 and introducing the AQA GCSE specification.”

“We’re also increasing the profile of Biology through Norwich High’s Clubs and Societies programme. At our Biological Society we study and plan investigations into the effects of ocean acidification and climate change by using brine shrimp. Students get to grow their own shrimp and take them home after their investigation.

Pond Club makes use of our fantastic Outdoor Learning facilities at the Dingly Dell. Every Friday, Dr Thorndycroft and her students meet to examine the biodiversity of the school pond. They have introduced new species of pond plant and studied the types of wildlife living at the pond’s different depths.

“We are also going to start a Medical Society for students who aspire to study Veterinary, Dental and Medical Sciences at university.”

Focused and dedicated

Mr Lynch is no stranger to teaching in classrooms like ours, thanks to his time working at Haberdashers’ Boys’ School in Hertfordshire.

“The students here at Norwich High are so focused and dedicated. In my experience, students are less distracted when learning in this type of environment,” said Mr Lynch. “Teaching all girls is quite similar to teaching all boys in some respects: they are more comfortable to be themselves in the classroom.”

Mr Lynch is keen to help our students find their voice in Biology.

“Studies show that girls of school age are more afraid to take risks than their male counterparts. Making mistakes is the best way to learn. My goal is therefore to make sure our students feel safe enough to challenge themselves in the Biology classroom.”

Mrs Anne Farthing, Head of Science at Norwich High School for Girls, said: “We are so happy to welcome Mr Lynch to the team. He brings with him enthusiasm, experience and ambition. Our students are already benefiting from his innovations.”
